stockpilecomics: I hope I’m not stepping all over Kansas’ post (considering that he’s gotten his piece up by his deadline for the past 2 weeks in a row!), but I’ve been working on this damned thing all night and I just feel that I need to post it and move on with my life. So, The Venture Brothers is easily one of my 5 favorite shows on TV these days, and definitely one of my 10 or 15 favorite shows of all time. Every episode makes me laugh no matter how many times I’ve seen it, and I love the characters to death. These year+ long breaks that they take in between every other season drive me nuts because I want more episodes so bad! Anyway, it took me forever to come up with an idea for this sketch because I wanted to convey my all of my love for The Venture Brothers in one image. I sketched out some montage/group shots and portraits of individual characters, but nothing clicked. With my deadline fast approaching and no firm ideas in mind for this week’s sketch I decided to look through some artbooks I own for inspiration. It was in a book called Dames, Dolls & Delinquents: A Collector’s Guide To Sexy Pulp Fiction Paperbacks that I stumbled upon the cover of an old Venus Books paperback by Gene Harvey called “Cutie”, which has essentially the same layout and design as my piece. When I saw the guy in the uncredited cover painting standing there in a brown suit wearing that hat, it suddenly hit me…Why not do an homage to one of my favorite Venture Brothers episodes: Everybody Comes To Hank’s?! The drawing and inking were a piece of cake, but I knew in my heart of hearts that in order to really make this piece shine I’d have to push my extremely limited knowledge of Photoshop to it’s limits. Getting that old, torn paper look was a pain in my ass. I’m sure that there must be an easier way to achieve that effect than how I went about it, but regardless, I’m happy with how it turned out. Drawn on 8.5x11” bristol, inked with a crow quill, some Pitt Pens, and a bit of dry brush, topped off with a heaping helping of whiteout, and mucked around with in Photoshop until I feared that my head might explode from frustration.

I guess I shouldn’t say “falls” on me, because I kinda pull the pile down on myself. I am all extra persnickety about these little details. And… so is Jackson. We love to get this kinda crap “right”. Jackson has come to save these little graphic jobs for me to do. Why? Because I am a nut who will spend way too much time on it, and do it for free. If I don’t do it, I see the results of a little gem in the making left in the hands of an overworked animator, and I flip-out, like a child… “Ahhh, come on! It should be way more cool than that!” So I do it myself. You guys will never understand how much little pieces of shit Jackson and I have to do ourselves… Thankless crap. Yet… It’s worth it. Isn’t it? We think so. This is the cover of the Guild of Calamitous Intent Handbook used by the Monarch (and Hank) in “Are You There God? It’s Me Dean”. I want Adult Swim to use it as the cover of a notebook. They make this fake Venture Brothers book that is kinda goofy. I mean, I like the idea, but they missed the mark on the illustration. I think my guild cover would be cool if it were used as one of those stupid notebooks… I’d get one. And, Jackson should do a cover of Giant Boy Detective as one. Don’t know, might be too insider for those skittish guys at [as]. All done in adobe Illustrator 10, made nice-nice in Photoshop… No clip art is EVER used.” - Doc Hammer The fact that he used the word persnickety makes me even more insane/crazy about him.
